HMSHost Inks Deals For Dining, Retail At SLC

HMSHost Corp. has signed two restaurant and retail agreements at Salt Lake City International (SLC).

“We are excited that Salt Lake City has chosen to award us these two new contracts, which includes an expansion of our existing retail operations,” says Joe Waller, HMSHost’s vice president of business development. “It is very important to us to make the traveler’s day better, and with signature restaurants, innovative stores and newsstands, we’re confident that we’ve accomplished that goal.”

As part of the airport’s revitalized concessions program, HMSHost will debut well-known local dining icons, including Café© Rio, Greek Souvlaki, High West Distillery & Saloon, Market Street Grill, Mill Creek Coffee, Salt Lake Pizza & Pasta, and Veloce Cucina Toscana.

“Partnering with HMSHost and offering the variety of local Salt Lake City businesses like Café© Rio, Market Street Grill and Mill Creek Coffee in the airport will provide both visitors and residents alike the best taste and value that Salt Lake City has to offer,” says Maureen Riley, executive director for the Salt Lake City International Airports Authority.

Regional and national dining options will also be available, such as Smashburger, making its airport debut; Auntie Anne’s, Great Wraps, Starbucks, French Meadow Bakery and Fresh Market OnTheGo.

On the retail side, travelers will find local Utah products featured in specialty stores Radio Road and Utah, as well as The Wall Street Journal newsstand, The Economist newsstand, Simply Books, The Children’s Hour Bookstore and Techshowcase.

Construction is expected to be completed by summer 2012.

The company has been named first place winner in the American Society of Interior Designers Washington Metro Chapter’s Celebrate Design! 2011 competition for two of its airport restaurants, Wicker Park Seafood & Sushi Bar and Beaudevin Wine Bar & Restaurant.

Wicker Park Seafood & Sushi bar at Chicago O’Hare International (ORD) won in the Detail & Small/Unique Space commercial category; Beaudevin Wine Bar & Restaurant at Miami International (MIA) won in the commercial category for best design of a Hospitality or Retail Location. Both restaurants were created by HMSHost.

“We’re thrilled to be recognized for the design and architecture of these two popular restaurants,” says Claire Tamburro, HMSHost’s director of design. “Designing and building a restaurant in an airport brings challenges of working in smaller spaces and accomplishing all of the construction while the airport is open — practically 24 hours a day. With this ASID Washington Metro chapter acknowledgement, HMSHost shares recognition with some of the top designers in the country.”

This year’s biennial project competition entries were judged by ASID’s Tennessee chapter. Entries were submitted anonymously and were judged using requirements for dé©cor, color and use of space.
