McCarran International (LAS) and Four Winds Interactive have teamed to design a digital signage program for the airport.
LAS’ Terminal 3, which opened in June, features hundreds of digital signs such as airport directories and double-sided video walls acting as gate information displays outside each arrival and departure gate.
“One of our goals was to ensure that modern helpful amenities were in place for travelers,” says Randall H. Walker, who oversees LAS in his role as director of aviation for Clark County, Nev. “Four Winds Interactive’s software allows us to do just that by offering a wide variety of useful information via any single interactive sign. This helps patrons better navigate the airport and become aware of factors affecting their travel.”
The double-sided video walls show six portrait screens on each side that reach 15 feet high. Content included real-time flight information, destination-specific items such as weather forecasts and photo backgrounds of travel destinations. Synchronized videos, such as those of falling dice or slot machines in action, play at the top and bottom of the hour to showcase the night life of Las Vegas.
Digital wayfinding played a key role in the project’s development. There are three-dimensional custom floor maps with more than 1,500 path-finding directions to help visitors navigate the airport; travelers are able to find information about shopping, dining, airport clubs and other airport amenities. By scanning a QR code, travelers can download to their smartphone a “map it” feature that shows animated route from their current location to their destination, including turn-by-turn directions.
“Interactive digital signage was essential to this project,” says Walker. “Four Winds’ works were already widely displayed in Las Vegas, and its new contributions will further improve visitors’ and locals’ travel experiences when flying in and out of McCarran.”
