LAX Breaks Ground on Automated People Mover Project

Looking to reduce traffic around the Los Angeles International (LAX) Central Terminal, local public officials joined airport executives this month in breaking ground on a new Automated People Mover (APM) train that will connect travelers directly to terminals and create a new convenient location for passenger pick-up and drop-offs.

This $4.9 billion APM project is part of the $14 billion LAX transformation that began a decade ago, and is slated to open in 2023.

Upon completion, APM trains will arrive every two minutes, have wide doors for easy access, large windows for viewing, and plenty of hand holds and seats. Station platforms along the 2.25-mile path will be open air and feature escalators, elevators, and moving walkways for quick access to the terminals, while also connecting to L.A. Metro’s light rail system.

Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), operators of LAX, note the APM will serve 30 million passengers annually.  The APM is the centerpiece of the LAX Landside Access Modernization Program (LAMP), which also includes a Consolidated Rent-A-Car facility and roadway improvements.

“The APM will transform transportation to and from our airport improving the experience for the 50 million visitors to and from Los Angeles every year,” says Los Angeles Council member Joe Buscaino. “Continued investment in our airport will result in continued returns for our residents, local businesses and more.”
