Los Angeles International’s (LAX) iconic Theme Building is turning 50 years old, and to celebrate, the airport is having a “Sunday Morning Coffee.”
The first 300 attendees age 12 and older at the event, which takes place from 8:30 to 11 a.m. June 19 on the Observation Deck atop the Theme Building, will receive a commemorative coin.
The Observation Deck has a 360-degree view of the airport’s terminals and airfield, with telescopes installed for free viewing. In conjunction with the coffee event, the space-age, retro-themed Encounter Restaurant, directly under the Observation Deck, will offer a special menu for the day.
“Delaware North Companies Travel Hospitality Services at Los Angeles International Airport is looking forward to being a part of the iconic Theme Building’s 50th anniversary this month,” says Delaware North Companies Travel Hospitality Services General Manager Kurt Clausen. “We’ll serve a special Plane Spotter Lunch menu at the Encounter Restaurant, which is located inside the Theme Building, on June 19 at 11 a.m.”
There will also be a free raffle to win a die-cast scale model of the new Singapore Airlines A380 super jump jet that will begin service at LAX on July 1.
The 50-year-old landmark is designed to look like a spaceship landed in the middle of the airport. It just underwent a three-year, $12.3M renovation that included a seismic retrofit to install a rooftop tuned mass damper to absorb motion caused by an earthquake; it is the first time in the United States that a TMD has been installed on the top of a building.
