Los Angeles International (LAX) will construct a $1.3 billion, 12-gate concourse addition to the Tom Bradley International Terminal, with a completion goal of late-2019, the airport said. The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners approved the project on Thursday.
The Midfield Stellate Concourse is considered to be Phase 1 of a two-phase addition to the TBIT. The concourse will connect to TBIT via a 1,000-foot-long passenger tunnel that will start in a new gateway facility built adjacent to the terminal. The airport will also undertake a separate Baggage Optimization Project.
LAX said the concourse will “include a wide variety of exciting food and retail options for passengers, as well as additional space for airline clubs.” Sustainability will also be a key feature of the new concourse, which has been designed to achieve LEED Silver certification.
“Those of us who operate airports expect, and our customers expect, a great experience. One that is safe, and one that is adapted to what passengers require today, which is a technologically advanced and efficient experience,” said Los Angeles World Airports CEO Deborah Flint. “We will design a concourse with our passengers and their needs, top of mind, and deliver an innovative experience that is first-class.”
A planned second phase will add additional gates on the south end of the terminal. Site preparation for the new concourse has begun with the demolition of a former TWA hangar, to be followed by the demolition of a former U.S. Coast Guard hangar.
