Massport Board OKs Mid-Year Adjustment To Rates, Charges

The Massachusetts Port Authority board has approved a mid-year adjustment to its rates and charges for fiscal year 2011.

Landing fees, baggage screening fees and most per-passenger fees have gone down; however, the board has slightly increased some terminal rents at Boston Logan International (BOS).

Landing fees at BOS went down $0.14 from last year’s approved rate to $4.61 per 1,000 pounds. Baggage fees dropped $0.05 per bag to $1.23.

Terminal building rates for Terminals A, B and C have remained unchanged; rental rates in Terminal E will go up slightly but will be offset by the lowering of some passenger fees.

The original rates were established last fall based on Massport’s budgets and airline activity. But landed weights through February at BOS are more than 3% higher than projected, so the adjustments let the airport recover unanticipated costs or adjust for a change in volumes that may impact rates. Most airlines will see a savings in their operating costs at the airport as a result.

“These reductions in fees come at a time when the airline industry is once again faced with high prices for aviation fuel due to the increased cost of oil,” says Massport CEO and Executive Director Thomas J. Kinton, Jr. “We’ve worked hard to contain costs and to maintain a relatively flat cost structure for the past three and a half years, which is a significant achievement.”
