Memphis International A (MEM) has opened a new lounge for traveling U.S. military personnel and their family members. The lounge also includes a new private nursing room.
MEM has traditionally created space in the airport for traveling military during the holiday season, but this lounge is different. Purpose-built by airport’s own construction team, the new lounge is a permanent, fully-enclosed space located next to Gate B1, just past the B Terminal security checkpoint.
Another new addition this year is a private room inside the military lounge specifically made for nursing mothers. The room features comfortable seats, soft lighting and a power outlet/charging station for electronic devices or pumps. The nursing room is open to all traveling mothers, not just military.
The lounge will be staffed during the holidays by Delta Air Lines personnel and other airport staff, including volunteers from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and MEM’s Blue Suede Service. It will offer holiday snacks, newspapers and magazines donated by Delta and airport concessionaires and volunteers. The lounge is equipped with comfortable chairs, a couch, a flat screen TV, power plugs, and a charging station for electronic devices.
“We’re pleased to again be able to provide this small token of appreciation for our U.S. service men and women,” says Scott Brockman, Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority president and CEO. “It’s our way to show them support, encouragement, and assistance during their holiday travels and to further our goal of providing a ‘Positively MEMorable’ experience.”
