Memphis International (MEM) will modernize its B Concourse, setting the stage for the consolidation of operations into that building.
The multi-year plan includes consolidating airline operations, food and beverage, and retail concessions in the B Concourse and also will involve improvements such as the addition of moving walkways, wider corridors, larger boarding areas, higher ceilings and increased natural lighting.
Ultimately, the south ends of both the A and C concourses will be removed to allow aircraft unobstructed access to the B Concourse. The project, expected to cost $114 million, will take five to seven years.
Demolition of Concourse A will begin late this year; the south end of the C Concourse will be removed in 2015. Airlines will begin moving to the B Concourse in mid-2015 and the modernization efforts are slated to begin in 2016.
“We have begun the process of reinventing Memphis Airport,” says Scott Brockman, MEM’s president and CEO. “Part of that reinvention involves consolidating operations so we can better serve our passengers, airlines, concessionaires and employees.”
