Mexico Inaugurates Country’s 1st Privately Built Airport

The first completely privately built airport in Mexico was officially inaugurated Nov. 5.

Mar de Cortes International (PPE) is the first international airport in Puerto Peé±asco, giving vacationers easy access to the Sea of Cortez beaches and wildlife and recreational offerings that had previously only been accessible by long drives across desert and mountain terrain for most travelers.

The airport, which is 20 miles south of the city of Puerto Peé±asco and approximately 60 miles from the U.S. border, will be operated by Operadora Aeroportuaria Golfo de Cortes, S.E. de C.V., a Grupo Vidanta company. It is expected to serve 200,000 passengers a year and has one terminal.

The opening “was a great event headed by Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon,” says Fernando Antillon, airport director. “Something to note is that with the airport, we will be able to attract visitors coming from air transportation which we could not do until now.”
