Joomchi, an ancient art form, has arrived at Miami International (MIA).
“Whisper-Romance” by Korean-born artist Jiyoung Chung uses the art form, in which several pieces of thin, handmade paper into a strong and textured single sheet. Several layers of mulberry paper, or Hanji, are combined into one after agitating them for hours by hand.
Chung has made Joomchi into a more contemporary art form filled with sculptural and textural imagery. Her background includes traditional Oriental painting and art training in the United States.
“It is extraordinary that these delicate and mysterious pieces convincingly evoke traces of tradition yet so powerfully reference contemporary concepts,” says Yolanda Sanchez, Miami-Dade Aviation Department division director of fine arts and cultural affairs. “Chung’s cultural background and experience are evident in the work but her process is experimental and playful, pushing the envelope of discovery. Her exhibit gives travelers a sampling of Joomchi and represents a significant addition to our rotating art program.”
The collection is on display through January at the airport’s Central Terminal Gallery in Concourse E.
