Edge4Vets and employers at Miami International (MIA) are teaming up to host a workshop aimed at preparing veterans from the region for aviation jobs available at the airport.
The workshop will help veterans identify specific values and skills they developed in the military and apply them to job opportunities with Edge4Vets partners companies, including American and Delta airlines, HMSHost Corp., Hudson Group, Republic Metals, Swissport and more.
The workshop, scheduled for May 7 with a follow up session on May 20, will be sponsored by Carnival Corp. and will be offered by the Human Resiliency Institute at Fordham University.
“One out of every four jobs in Miami-Dade County is directly or indirectly supported by MIA, and we aim to grow that number by partnering with Fordham’s Edge4Vets and connecting local veterans to the many job opportunities at our airport,” says Emilio Gonzalez, aviation director. “As a retired U.S. Army officer, I understand the challenges that veterans face when entering the civilian workforce, as well as the strengths they bring to the workplace. Well-trained, hardworking military veterans can become strong contributors to our growing global gateway.”
Once a base for the program is established at MIA, Edge4Vets and industry partners such as Airports Council International – North America hope to expand the program into a national model for incorporating veterans into airport workforces across the U.S, organizational officials say.
