New Mobile App Coming To MIA

Miami International (MIA) has a new and improved version of its mobile app in the works.

MIA Airport Official, the existing app, launched in November 2014. It allows users to search for flight information and record where they parked; it can also show the fees associated with the airport’s multiple parking facilities. Plus, there is a dining and shopping directory that includes maps, ground-transportation information and an “Around Me” portal, which pinpoints travelers’ locations and shows what amenities are within a five-minute walk.

“We put out last year a way-finding app for the Miami International Airport, knowing that we were going to have to update it right away,” says Emilio T. Gonzalez, aviation director at MIA.

The new version will be integrated into MIA’s beacon technology, which is comprised of 500 location transmitters throughout the airport’s terminals that can interact and send notifications to mobile devices. The beacons will communicate to travelers through the app, with the technology acting as a guide to MIA.

“If the first one was 1.0, this is going to be 3.0,” says Gonzalez.

The app, due to launch early next year, also will notify travelers of flight delays, gate changes and the amount of time before boarding starts.
