NY/NJ Port Authority Adds Nursing Stations at Four Airports

The Port Authority of New York/New Jersey has opened 28 upgraded nursing suites for mothers on the go at Newark Liberty International (EWR), John F. Kennedy International (JFK), LaGuardia (LGA) and New York Stewart (SWF) airports.

The lactation suites, purchased from Burlington, VT-based Mamava, are all located post-security and provide breastfeeding mothers with clean and dignified lactation places. The new suites make all four airports fully compliant with new legislation mandating large and medium airports to provide lactation areas in every terminal by October 2020.

“With the Port Authority in the midst of comprehensive airport redevelopment, any amenity that makes the travel experience better for nursing mothers is an important component of that modernization,” says Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole. “We recognize the needs of our travelers and are committed to providing them accessible, sanitary and convenient nursing suites.”

The new nursing facilities are larger versions of previous pods that were first introduced in 2015 at LGA and EWR. With the new installations, there are now 12 available at JFK, nine at Newark Liberty, six at LaGuardia Airport and one at SWF.

The lactation suites are large enough to accommodate a mother with a stroller, her child and a traveling companion and feature comfortable benches, a fold-down table, an electrical outlet for plugging in a breast pump and a door that can be locked for privacy.
