the post of general manager of LaGuardia (LGA). He replaces Warren Kroeppel, who retired from PANYNJ in mid-November.
In his new position, Bosco will oversee an airport that last year handled more than 22 million passengers on more than 350,000 flights. He is in charge of all airport operations, including operations, maintenance and safety.
Bosco says that while his immediate task is to “ensure that day-to-day airport operations are safe, secure, efficient, and neighbor-friendly,” he is also looking ahead to future needs of the aging airport. “In large part, LGA’s infrastructure, its power and utility systems, hangars, etc., are 50-60 years old and in need of rehabilitation,” Bosco says. “The airport’s Central Terminal Building (CTB), opened in 1964, is clearly incapable of handling its share of the 34 million annual air passengers forecast to use LGA by the year 2035.” He says a “significant and prudent investment” is needed for infrastructure renewal and to ensure the facilities can meet expanding demand.
PANYNJ’s 2011 budget calls for $13M to be spent on CTB development at LGA, with upgrades in airside and landside infrastructure to accommodate projected demand.
Bosco, who joined the PANYNJ in 1986, has held several staff and operations management positions at John F. Kennedy International (JFK), Newark Liberty International (EWR), and LGA, and has worked as a supervising engineer in the Aviation Department’s central office. A 1980 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, he served six years on active duty and 18 years in the National Guard and Reserve as an Army officer and helicopter pilot. He is a veteran of Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm, and a recipient of the Bronze Star for meritorious service in the combat zone. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, then-Lieutenant Colonel Bosco led his 553-person National Guard battalion in providing perimeter security for emergency workers at the World Trade Center site. He retired from the Army in 2004 with the rank of Colonel and he is a member of the Board of Directors of the Queens Chamber of Commerce.
