PHX Hires Bennett As Aviation Director

James Bennett is returning to Phoenix, this time as its aviation director.

Bennett emerged from a national search. He’ll be in charge of Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX), Phoenix Deer Valley (DVT) and Phoenix Goodyear (GYR), and he’ll oversee membership in the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority.

“Jim has extensive aviation knowledge and a proven track record of success in the aviation industry,” says Ed Zuercher, Phoenix city manager. “He knows the issues facing major aviation systems like ours in Phoenix, and I am pleased to have him join the Phoenix team to provide leadership on the aviation issues facing us at the community, state and federal levels.”

Bennett has spent nearly 35 years in the industry. He served as president and CEO of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, overseeing operators at Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA) and Washington Dulles International (IAD). He also oversaw five airports within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi as CEO of the Abu Dhabi Airports Co. He has been a consultant for the past few years for foreign and domestic transportation companies.

From 1988 to 1996 Bennett was the assistant aviation director in Phoenix, assisting with community discussions that led to a third runway at PHX. He also oversaw the construction of Terminal 4 at PHX and supervised the airport’s finance, engineering, planning and maintenance operations.

“I am delighted to have been selected for the position of aviation director for the city of Phoenix,” Bennett says. “I look forward to returning to the Valley and joining a dynamic team at the city and the aviation department as we address the many challenges and opportunities facing the aviation industry in the Phoenix area.”

Bennett will start Oct. 5. When he arrives, Acting Aviation Director Paul Blue will return to his permanent assignment as a deputy city manager overseeing aviation and economic development-related departments.
