Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX) has revealed the first phase of its newly modernized Terminal 3.
The terminal, which originally opened in 1979, has been updated with modern finishes, more natural lighting and views of the Phoenix landscape and downtown skyline. A larger, consolidated security checkpoint and 31 new ticket counters have also been added. Plus, there is now a West Plaza, which includes an outdoor area with native Arizona plants and an animal relief area, and a Museum Gallery in post-security that showcases Arizona’s culture and artistic heritage.
“This enhanced terminal will help travelers find their way more intuitively while showcasing spectacular views of Camelback Mountain and the Phoenix skyline,” said Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton. “As the largest economic engine in Arizona, these improvements to Sky Harbor will benefit not only travelers but the entire region.”
The overall Terminal 3 modernization project will cost $590 million (in 2014 dollar figures) and is financed through airport revenues like parking, concessions and tenant fees. No local tax dollars will be used. The entire project is scheduled for completion in 2020.
