Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) has introduced three hand-painted, gently used pianos so travelers can practice their piano skills while they wait for bags or for their flight while at the airport. Free the Music Pittsburgh, a nonprofit group that places used pianos in public places, has provided the pianos that grace in the baggage claim and concourses at PIT – and they’re available for anyone to play.
“The piano playing connects with people, and the airport is a good place of connection,” said Keny Marshall, PIT arts and culture manager. “Having the opportunity for people to open play the piano and learn to the play the piano is really important.”
Free the Music commissioned Pittsburgh artists to paint them, providing a showcase for the local art scene at the airport and enabling the artists to have their work displayed for the traveling public.
