Raleigh-Durham Airport Starting New Master Plan

The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority will launch Vision 2040, an 18-month master planning program, starting June 1.

Vision 2040 will identify key short- and long-term development projects for Raleigh-Durham International (RDU) over the next 25 years.

“Through the master planning process, the airport authority will continue our commitment to providing customers a world-class experience while maintaining our role as one of the region’s economic drivers with an $8 billion annual impact,” says Dickie Thompson, chairman of the authority’s board.

The process will assess expected growth in activity at RDU, gauge the ability of existing facilities to meet future demand and identify developments to deal with shortcomings. RDU plans to engage the public throughout the process, conducting meetings and presenting alternative scenarios. The first public events will be held June 29 in Durham, N.C., and June 30 in Raleigh, N.C.

“Public involvement and stakeholder coordination will be critical to ensuring that the selected plan meets users’ needs by providing an efficient and customer-focused airport in a cost-effective manner,” Thompson says.
