San Diego International’s (SAN) new consolidated rental car center has earned the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The center opened in January 2016 and encompasses 2 million square feet of space, housing most of the rental car companies serving SAN in one location.
“We’re excited to add the rental car center to the airport’s growing list of LEED-certified buildings, further demonstrating our commitment to sustainable building practices,” said Thella Bowens, president and CEO. “By having the rental car companies in one consolidated facility we can provide a better customer experience, all while maximizing the airport’s 661-acre footprint in a sustainable way.”
The facility is a 24-hour, 365-days-a-year operation, so the lighting was designed to be energy efficient by reducing lighting levels in certain areas during off-peak times. The 15 car wash bays utilize resourceful water collection and reuse methods. The facility is able to reclaim 85-90 percent of the water used in the facility, and seven bio-swale areas collect rainwater and run-off.
The contractors and designers who worked on the project are Austin| Sundt Joint Venture, Demmattei Wong Architecture, Kimley-Horn, AECOM, WSP/Parsons Brinckerhoff and KTU+A.
