San Diego International Airport’s (SAN) Innovation Lab is officially focusing its sights on parking.

Last month, SAN invited five companies into their Airport Innovation Lab to utilize the skills of each in streamlining the airport experience. Baggage Nanny, FreedomPark, ParkConnect, TravelCar and Vark all sent representatives to the Lab to participate in a 16-week program. At the end, the Airport Authority will sit for a presentation of the group’s ideas and solutions to proposed issues. Participating companies are able to learn while earning potential work with the airport in the future.

“After repurposing a portion of the decommissioned Commuter Terminal, we sought a third-party operator to help manage the Airport Innovation Lab and fine-tune our processes,” said Rick Belliotti, the Airport Authority’s Director of Innovation and Small Business Development. “Now we are off and running, testing innovations that will improve the airport experience,” he added.

As far as the solutions they’ve been working on, the guests currently in the lab have proposed off-airport valet service in addition to rental car valet, among others.

The 3,500-square-foot space offers a functional mini-terminal area with ticket counters and a bag claim carousel, all without passenger or security concerns to work around.
