The Port of Seattle Commission approved the first step in a multi-phase modernization of the main terminal at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) by allocating $149 million for construction funding.
The Port also approved a new partnership that allows Alaska Airlines to manage this phase of the project. In this first phase, the airport plans to reconfigure the four-decade old main terminal north end ticketing area, expand the security checkpoints, upgrade facility systems and provide an updated, light-filled, open space that improve passenger flow.
Alaska Airlines will lead the project as a tenant, providing design expertise that will help mitigate the impact to travelers during the three-year construction project. Phase 1 will add approximately 20,000 sq. ft. of employee office and ticket counter space and new check-in kiosk and baggage drop-off areas.
“This is an exciting new chapter to improve the efficiency of our airport,” said Lance Lyttle, SEA managing director. “We are pleased to work with Alaska Airlines on this project with our share emphasis on the customer experience, the need or our projects to deliver economic benefit to the community, and to constantly improve the sustainability of our work.”
