The Port of Seattle Commission voted this week to increase wages and compensation for about 3,500 workers at Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA).
The commission approved a minimum wage and compensation policy for aeronautical workers and an expanded work force development program in July. Commissioners will consider further action on compensation for concessions employees in conjunction with the Airport Dining and Retail Master Plan, which will be under development later this year.
“Today’s action will improve the quality of life for those who work at Sea-Tac Airport – not just increasing their pay but providing benefits, paid leave and training opportunities that many have never had,” says Courtney Gregoire, co-president of the commission. “We worked for several months to create a policy that’s the right solution for these workers, one that strengthens safety and security, recognizes the business and operational realities of an international airport, and respects the specific authority we have as a port district.”
The agency has authority over SEA, ensuring safe and secure operations within the facility and a pleasant and consistent travel experience for those who visit, according to the organization’s website.
