SFO Exhibit Gives Viewers Peek At Hindu Sculptures

A new exhibition at San Francisco International (SFO) offers visitors a peek into Indian sculpture and historic imagery.

“Deities in Stone: Hindu Sculpture from the Collections of the Asian Art Museum” shows how sculpture is such an essential part of the civilization. Consecrated images and forms of the divine are the way Hindus worship, meditate on or otherwise communicate with the religion’s deities and demigods. Several followers think all are manifestations of a supreme power, including those who affect the universe’s cycles of creation, preservation and dissolution.

The works from the collections of the Asian Art Museum show how Hindus honor their religion and deities. Items in the exhibit include 7th and 8th century temple images carved stone and wooden sculptures more than 1,000 years later for use in religious processions. All of them show the divine in its myriad manifestations.

The free exhibit runs through Feb. 24 and can be found post-security in Terminal 3, Boarding Area F.
