SFO, United Open Renovated Terminal, Club

The newly renovated Terminal 3 East Concourse at San Francisco International (SFO) has opened to passengers.

The $253 million renovation was done through a partnership between the airport and United Airlines; the new concourse is made up of a concourse connecting Boarding Areas E and F, a central security checkpoint, three extra boarding gates and a new United Club.

“Terminal 3 East is the latest expression of our vision for the guest experience at SFO,” says John L. Martin, airport director. “This inviting, relaxing space features a fresh take on what we aim to deliver in all of our facilities: thoughtful passenger amenities, concessions representing the San Francisco Bay Area, inspiring public artwork and environmentally sustainable design.”

The renovation includes eight new retail and dining options, free Wi-Fi, 230 power outlets, 200 USB outlets, four new art installations provided through the San Francisco Art Commission, lounge-style seating and private changing rooms in the restrooms.

The new United Club is 6,000 square feet and can accommodate more than 130 people. A complimentary menu will feature seasonal offerings, such as fresh zucchini, yellow squash and cherry tomatoes; butternut squash soup; dressed spinach salad; and an assortment of meats and cheeses. Complimentary beverages, a selection of wine and spirits, and free Wi-Fi are also available.

“The latest updates at San Francisco create a truly premium experience for our customers,” says Sandra Pineau-Boddison, senior vice president of customers for United. “With the area’s modern design and amenities, San Francisco, the nation’s top trans-Pacific gateway, will continue to offer the traveler-friendly environment our customers expect at one of the country’s most prominent airports.”

The facility was renovated through a design-build partnership between Gensler and Hensel Phelps. Improvements were made to the heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, and the electric load centers in pursuit of a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certification.

“The Hensel Phelps-led design-build team with Gensler is excited to unveil the next major section of Terminal 3, T3 East, to the City of San Francisco and the world,” says Jim Pappas, vice president and Northern California district manager for Hensel Phelps. “This fantastic outcome could not have been accomplished without the tremendous effort, dedication and quality work that was performed by local craft and the subcontracting community in true partnership with Hensel Phelps, SFO, United, CPM and PGH Wong.”
