In an effort to reduce its carbon footprint, the Calgary Airport Authority is introducing “smart cars” to its group of airside escort vehicles, which will be used on construction projects around Calgary International (YYC).
Each of the vehicles has a 3-cylinder engine and averages 1.4 gallons of gasoline per 62.13 miles. They can drive the length of the new 14,000-foot runway 148 times on one tank of gas.
“YYC is already experiencing a high level of construction activity with the Airport Development Program, and that activity level will only increase as we continue to develop our facilities to meet the needs of our growing economy,” says Garth Atkinson, president and CEO of The Calgary Airport Authority. “These new smart cars will play an important role in reducing gas consumption and our environmental footprint. The authority is always looking for new forward-thinking ways to improve efficiency, and I believe that these new vehicles will be a great investment for our airport.”
The Airport Development Program includes building a 14,000-foot runway and a new international concourse, adding 22 new gates and doubling the size of the existing terminal building.
