SMF Seeks New Director Of Airports To Replace John Wheat

Sacramento International Airport (SMF) is seeking a new director of airports to replace John Wheat, who plans to retire effective April 21. Wheat has served as director of airports for SMF since 2013.

During Wheat’s tenure, major changes have come to SMF. Cost per enplanement dropped from $17.61 in 2013 to an estimated $13.55 in 2017. SMF served a record 10.9 million passengers in 2017. The airport also completed several projects, including the installation of a new solar facility in 2017 and a food court remodel.

Wheat has more than 30 years of airport executive management experience at several major airport systems throughout the United States. Before coming to SMF, Wheat was executive director of Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP). He served as executive director of the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority before that, from 1999 to 2011, and he was deputy executive director of finance and administration for the Salt Lake City Department of Airports from 1983 to 1992.

Applicants interested in the airport director position at SMF can apply through the County of Sacramento’s page on governmentjobs.com before Feb. 9.
