STL Includes Art Project In Terminal 1 Renovations

As part of its $50M renovations to its historic Terminal 1 and connecting concourses, Lambert-St. Louis International (STL) will unveil a new art project.

The airport has commissioned public art for the new Public Art and Culture Project. Art glass screens will be installed in Concourses A and C during the yearlong renovation that begins Dec. 1.

“We have a wealth of artistic talent in our community and this project is a great first step to enhance the airport experience, foster civic pride and create a positive lasting impression of St. Louis for our visitors,” says Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge, airport director. “The glass screens will offer bursts of color and creativity that will give our renovated concourses new and exciting focal points for our travelers.”

The airport’s new Art Advisory Committee chose the artists based on their past artistic works and the best artistic styles that would translate to glass. Each artist will create designs for three side-by-side glass panels measuring 5.5 feet high by 3 feet wide, with an overall glass “canvas” of nearly 50 sq. ft. The first of the screens are slated to be installed by the spring.

The featured artists are  Lauren Adams, Sarah Giannobile and Joan Hall,  all of St. Louis, Mo.; Jana Harper of Clayton, Mo.; Tom Huck  and Eva Lundsager, both of University City, Mo.; William LaChance of Maplewood, Mo.; Edna Patterson-Petty of East St. Louis, Ill.; and Mel Watkin of Cobden, Ill.

“The nine selected regional artists represent a wide variety of contemporary artistic styles,” says Jill McGuire, executive director of the Regional Art
Commission and member of the Airport’s Art Advisory Committee. “The result will be an exciting and diverse collection of nine works created specifically for Lambert. It is wonderful to see Lambert’s commitment to enriching its public spaces with art.”

The renovation of the two concourses begins Phase II of the Airport Experience Program.  The interior roof structure of the concourses and all metal surfaces such as doors, columns and air supply ducts will be painted to coordinate with new tile flooring, new ceilings and a more efficient circular pendant lighting system. All concourse restrooms will be updated with Terrazzo flooring, new wall tile, new countertops and sink fixtures. The airport will also install new signage and directories.

Other changes in Terminal 1 include new ticket counters and Terrazzo flooring on the upper level, with open public views to outside; new baggage-claim restrooms and renovation of existing restrooms; upgraded Concourse C checkpoint; brighter ceiling treatments in the lower level, as well as raised ceilings; a new atrium to connect ticketing and lower levels; addition of the St. Louis Stage, a dedicated performance area in the lower level; and new interactive and static art displays in renovated areas.

The airport is committing $70M for all projects in the Airport Experience Program. The first phase accounted for $20M in projects, which included the installation of a new baggage system in Terminal 1 and the interior restoration of the terminal’s domed ceilings, as well as new roadway signage along Lambert International Boulevard.
