The $1 billion overhaul of Terminal 3 West originally scheduled to start in June at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has been postponed for at least six months due to reduced passenger and flight activity stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Terminal 3 West project will renovate the existing 400,000 square-foot western half of the terminal with new architectural finishes and new passenger amenities. It will also add 190,000 square feet of additional space, allowing for expanded food, beverage and retail concessions.
Aircraft gates will also be reconfigured to accommodate international flights, linked to the airport’s U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility through a new elevated secure connector. United Airlines operates from this portion of the terminal.
SFO has completed about 75 percent of design and enabling activities for the project, including relocation of utilities and tenants. Originally, the project had been scheduled for completion in fall 2023.
Other areas of Terminal 3 have already been upgraded. SFO reopened Boarding Area E with 10 gates for United in January 2014. In November 2015, SFO unveiled a renovated Terminal 3 East concourse, which included three aircraft gates, a consolidated security checkpoint and a new United Club location.
