The second phase of Tampa International Airport’s a (TPA) three-phase capital program spelled out in its master plan passed a major milestone Thursday when the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority approved a $66 million contract for preparation and construction of the airport’s SkyCenter.
“The passenger growth we’re experiencing at the airport underscores the importance of the entire Master Plan,” says Jeff Siddle, the airport’s vice president of planning and development. “SkyCenter is a key part of it. It will help us accommodate growth for years to come by allowing us to move our existing offices away from the terminal and repurpose that space for our passengers and guests.”
The construction contract, awarded to Hensel Phelps Construction, enables the company to develop the SkyCenter site, which will house TPA employee offices and allow the current office building to be demolished, making more room for passengers.
The addition of SkyCenter will expand TPA’s annual passenger capacity to 34 million, with construction expected to begin in January.
