The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority Board has approved agreements with both Uber and Lyft to operate at Raleigh-Durham International (RDU).
Both of the ride-sharing companies will be able to pick up and drop off travelers in the “pre-arranged services” zone of the commercial curb in front of both terminals. Individual drivers will no longer be required to register with the airport authority. Drivers will display company identification stickers on the front passenger-side windshield.
“Our goal with this agreement is to ensure that all of our passengers can access transportation to and from the airport with ease, so we work continually with service providers to ensure we have safe, reliable transportation options and that passenger loading and unloading areas operate as seamlessly as possible,” says Michael Landguth, president and CEO of the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority.
The agreements come after a new state law signed by Gov. Pat McCrory in September that changed the way ride-sharing companies operate in the state. The law allows airport authorities to regulate how the companies operate on airport property. The old law required vehicles offering transportation services for a fee to have a commercial license plate and commercial insurance.
Lift and Uber will pay RDU $1 for every vehicle with five or fewer passengers and $1.50 for vehicles that carry six to 11 passengers.
