Vision-Box Biometric Self-Boarding In Testing At LAX

Vision-Box biometric self-boarding went live at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) last year, and more airlines are signing on to the trial. Now, passengers boarding Lufthansa flights at LAX can use a Vision-Box biometric face-recognition face capture to board their flights faster.

Lufthansa is now part of the test program, which comes from a partnership between Vision-Box, Los Angeles World Airports, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

With Vision-Box’s high-resolution face capture system, passengers can board without having to present a passport or boarding pass. This is made possible by digital face tokens collected by U.S. Customs and Border Protection during the initial immigration process. When approaching self-boarding gates, Vision-Box software matches the face token with the customer’s image. Flight and passenger information are all saved with the traveler’s face token.

“Biometric self-boarding merges two of our highest priorities – improving the guest experience and enhancing security and safety for all those who travel through or work at LAX,” says Justin Erbacci, chief innovation and technology officer for LAX. “We are proud to be the first location in the United States to pilot this unique, paperless, biometric boarding process. CBP, Vision Box and Lufthansa have been tremendous partners in this effort. We plan to release further biometric solutions at LAX as part of our quest to lead the pack in embracing and implementing innovative technology that will benefit our passengers and make their journeys safer, faster and easier.”
