Residents of Kansas City voted Tuesday in favor of replacing the city’s existing three-terminal airport with a modern, single-terminal structure by a three-to-one margin.
That means the city of Kansas City will move forward on the next steps, which include finalizing a memorandum of understanding with Edgemoor Infrastructure, the private developer selected by the city through a procurement process.
The city council will have to approve that memorandum, as well as the final contract. But Edgemoor, according to a statement from the city, will begin scheduling design open houses to gather community input for the terminal’s final design.
Existing plans call for the new terminal to be built at the site of Kansas City International’s (MCI) shuttered Terminal A. The city hopes to open the new facility by the end of 2021.
City officials and the Kansas City Aviation Department have, through several ups and downs, been promoting the need for a new terminal for years. They’ve argued that the existing horseshoe-shaped terminals are aging beyond repair and obsolete, particularly in the years since the Sept. 11 attacks increased security requirements across the industry.
