Westfield has begun construction on Terminal 2 at Los Angeles International (LAX) in a project that will add 20 dining and retail locations.
Westfield’s 16,100-square-foot dining and retail collection will include eight airport concessions firsts. The company is projecting that sales will increase by more than 35 percent, reaching $42.7 million, excluding duty free. The redevelopment will take place while the terminal continues to serve travelers and is expected to be completed in 2015 with new retail, dining, and amenities phasing in incrementally.
Los Angeles World Airports is investing $300 million to modernize and improve the Terminal 2 systems, including a focus on energy efficiency and aesthetics of the space. The 11-gate terminal serves a mix of domestic and international carriers and handled 5.5 million passengers in 2013. The investment is part of a multi-billion dollar modernization underway at LAX.
“The Terminal 2 vision is to create a radically new environment that is tailor-made for and uniquely suited to the terminal’s travelers and its carriers,” says Dominic Lowe, executive vice president of Westfield.
The developer is partnering with LAX in renovations and enhancements at Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 6 and Tom Bradley International Terminal.
Westfield says the Terminal 2 design vision “will reflect the energy and echo the innovative, modern and always ‘on-the-go’ culture of Los Angeles.” The design include three distinct districts: the Commercial Hub that connects to the Dining Terrace, which then flows into an area called The Strand, a dining and shopping district.
Westfield’s operating partners at Terminal 2 are Crews (formerly Crews of California), HMSHost Corp., InMotion Entertainment Group LLC, Jackmont Hospitality/Atlanta Restaurant Partners and Paradies. The duty-free operator at Terminal 2 is DFS.
Restaurant concepts coming to Terminal 2 include SeaLegs Wine Bar, Slapfish Modern Seafood Shack, The Pie Hole pie and coffee shop, Pepita Cantina, Pick Up Stix, Fresh Brothers Pizza, Ciabatta Bar, Built (custom burgers), Barney’s Beanery and two Starbucks locations. Among the retail options are Spanx, CNBC (two locations), Univision Travel Essentials (two locations) and technology stores eSavvy and InMotion Entertainment. Two other concepts have yet to be decided, Westfield says.
Paradies will operate the Spanx, CNBC and Univision Travel Essentials; it will operate eSavvy in partnership with PeachMac Airports LLC.
Gregg Paradies, president and CEO of Paradies says the company is “thrilled to debut our company and these iconic brands” at LAX. “We believe this diverse mix of internationally known travel essentials and specialty retail stores will serve the discerning and well-traveled passenger of LAX.”
